The 6mm Norma BR (Bench Rest) is a centerfire cartridge designed primarily for long-range target shooting and benchrest competition. It was introduced in the early 1990s by the Swedish ammunition manufacturer Norma Precision AB.
The cartridge is based on the 6mm PPC (which was itself based on the .220 Russian case). It features a slightly larger case capacity and a sharper shoulder angle, which allows higher velocities and improved accuracy.
The 6mm Norma BR typically uses bullets weighing between 70 and 108 grains and has a muzzle velocity of around 2,900 to 3,100 feet per second (depending on the bullet weight). It has a reputation for excellent accuracy and low recoil, which makes it popular among competitive shooters.
The cartridge has been used to set numerous long-range shooting records, including the 1,000-yard Bench Rest world record of a 0.488-inch group set by Mike Stinnett in 2018.
The 6mm Norma BR is not a particularly versatile cartridge, as its range of suitable applications is quite narrow. It is best suited for long-range target shooting and benchrest competition, and is less well-suited for hunting or general-purpose shooting. Additionally, it can be relatively expensive and difficult to find compared to more common cartridges.
